The soil at Bouchard Finlayson is a living treasure—nurtured with mulch, compost, and minimal disturbance.
At Bouchard Finlayson, our farming practices are guided by respect for the land and a commitment to ecological balance. Alien vegetation is chipped and repurposed as mulch, cellar waste is composted, and cover crops are hand-sown without tilling to protect soil health. Herbicides are virtually obsolete, with weeds managed through handwork, brush cutting, and mowing.
We embrace insecticide-free farming, accepting minor insect presence as part of a healthy ecosystem and relying on preventative, low-impact methods. Protective drape nets safeguard ripening grapes from birds, while approved deterrents and visible patrols are used to respectfully manage baboon activity. Mealy bugs, the primary carriers of leaf roll virus, are controlled naturally through the introduction of tiny parasitic wasps that specifically target the pest without harming other beneficial insects.
This dedication to ecological balance and minimal intervention defines every bottle of Bouchard Finlayson wine.
To cultivate premium wines while preserving biodiversity, restoring soil health, and maintaining a fully integrated, low-chemical farming ecosystem.
To date, we have replaced chemical interventions with regenerative, biodiversity-focused practices, from composting and no-till cover crops to natural pest control and wildlife-sensitive vineyard management.
