means ‘life’ in Sesotho and Setswana
(and in Zulu and Xhosa it’s ‘Impilo’)

Bophelo was born from a simple but profound belief: that life, land, and community are inseparable.

Our process ensures that every initiative begins with the people who know their communities best and is refined through guidance, expertise, and collective decision-making. Each year follows a simple, transparent cycle that turns ideas into meaningful, funded action.

In Q1 every team member is invited to submit a cause or project they care about, grounded in one or more of Bophelo’s three pillars: People, Heritage, and Land.
These ideas may create opportunities, support learning, protect culture, celebrate creativity, restore nature, or strengthen sustainability. The goal is simple: individuals can bring forward what matters to them and the communities they understand.

The Bophelo Heartbeat helps shape every idea.
Once submitted, projects are reviewed by our Advisory Council. Their role is not to judge but to support. They act as sounding boards and creative partners, helping refine proposals so they are clear, purposeful, and aligned with Bophelo’s mission.

The Bophelo Compass decides what moves forward.
Each year, one member from each Advisory Council rotates onto the Compass, our decision-making board. In Q3, the decision-making board, the Compass review all refined proposals and approve projects for funding based on impact, alignment, and feasibility.
